Viborg Pilgrimage
Yes, we walked, but we also talked, prayed, reflected, sang (in Danish too!), ate very well, shopped, and visited churches, chapels and museums. And perhaps most important of all, made many new friends, both Danish and also from amongst our own group from Guildford Diocese.
The main walking journey with 14 pilgrims from Guildford Diocese and our twinned Danish Diocese of Viborg took us heading Southwards down the North Sea coast, into peerless blue skies, a dazzling sun shining and a light northerly wind behind. We started on a cold Tuesday morning in a sombre way at the museum marking the horrific 1st world war battle of Jutland, and finished Wednesday afternoon after some 20 miles walking at an absorbing maritime museum at the harbour of Thorsminde. Delightful views, naturally vegetated sand dunes all along the way, and lovely historic churches too, often in unlikely spots. Thereafter we visited local small town churches, and centres of various sorts of community activity. From the wonderful local people who hosted me for the four nights of our stay, I so enjoyed our brief glimpse into their Christian world - very like ours in many ways, but yet with quite different history, culture and traditions effecting their way of life in so many significant other ways.
